All aboard for a night of scientific fun!

29 July 2016

For the first time, The Workshops Rail Museum will open to the public after hours for a one-off After Dark event during National Science Week.

After Dark: The Science of….beer, wine and chocolate will give visitors a chance to learn the science behind some crowd favourites and for the adventurous, edible insects all while exploring the museum kid free!

Learn the story behind great beer from Australian beer writer of the year Matt Kirkegaard, hear some weird and wonderful facts from bone fide wine scientist, USQ’s Ursula Kennedy and learn from Seatonfire Chillli Chocolate’s Jason O’Connor about matching beer and chocolate for a taste sensation you’ve never imagined.

In the kitchen science extraordinaire Dr Joel Gilmore demonstrates the chemistry of proteins, novel chemicals and new technologies while USQ’s Professor Lindsay Brown will talk about how purple super foods can reverse health issues.

Adults will get a fun science lesson from Street Science Steve using Bunsen burners and liquid nitrogen and musician singer/songwriter Linda Capewell will be entertaining the crowds.

After enjoying the festivities, guests can meander through The Workshops Rail Museum’s expansive grounds and discover more about Queensland’s rail history through the Museum’s interactive exhibitions.

Queensland Museum Network Director and CEO Professor Suzanne Miller said it was expected the event would be popular as it was part of an overall celebration of science for National Science Week.

“Science is fun and these events showcase the science behind Australia’s favourite foods and oldest beverages, National Science Week really helps explore activities that everyone can enjoy,” she said.

“This is the first time we have taken After Dark to The Workshops Rail Museum and we are expecting the locals to fully embrace the event and jump on board for a night of fun.”

Local boutique beer supplier Pumpyard Brewery will be featured during the event at The Workshops Rail Museum on Thursday, 18 August.

After Dark: The Science of…beer, wine and chocolate is supported by Inspiring Australia. The 18+  event runs from 5.30pm-9pm and tickets cost $21.
