Museum free for workers & families to celebrate Ipswich 150

04 August 2010

Ipswich residents plus past and present Queensland Rail workers will receive free entry to The Workshops Rail Museum for the Annual Workers Reunion and Ipswich Family Open Day on Sunday 22 August to celebrate Ipswich’s 150th birthday.

The event honours the enormous contribution made by Ipswich and Queensland Rail workers to the development of the state and the strong Ipswich connection to rail.

Director of The Workshops Rail Museum Andrew Moritz said the event was about honoring the site and the men and women of Queensland Rail who helped shape Ipswich’s history.

“The Ipswich Railway Workshops was the centre of the Ipswich community, socially and economically for many years, and it is fitting that the site plays a part in the Ipswich 150 celebrations,” Mr Moritz said.

“Young visitors are encouraged to take part in our colouring competition by downloading the entry form from our website and bringing it in on the event day to go into the draw to win a family Steam Train trip.”

The annual event is now in its ninth year and, thanks to the generous support of Ipswich City Council, all Ipswich residents receive free entry for the day (proof of residency required).

Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said the Open Day was a great opportunity for Ipswich residents to show off their award-winning Museum to visiting friends and family with 50% off entry for their accompanying guests.

“We look forward to many visitors coming to Ipswich to enjoy a day of festivities including music from the Amberley Brass Band, local tourism displays, children’s activities, Museum exhibits and tours into the active heritage railway Workshops,” Cr Pisasale said.

The Workshops Rail Museum is part of the Queensland Museum and is winner of Australian and Queensland Tourism Awards for Heritage and Cultural Tourism. For further information, visit or phone (07) 3432 5100.
