Start the festive season at The Workshops Rail Museum

10 November 2010

Visitors can brush up on Australian Christmas songs and make decorations to start the festive season at the Santa Celebration event at The Workshops Rail Museum, 27 - 28 November.

Activities will include festive art and craft such as making Christmas decorations for the Museum’s Christmas tree, free jumping castle and rides on The Workshops Express miniature train, and the interactive sing-a-long Bush Galah Christmas Show.Santa Celebration at The Workshops Rail Museum

Children can also meet Santa and tell him their Christmas wishes.

Director of The Workshops Rail Museum Andrew Moritz said the Ipswich Railway Workshops has a long and varied history of traditions to celebrate Christmas and the Santa Celebration event continues and expands on the traditions of the site.

“Christmas was generally celebrated by the workers in each shop rather than across the site, with each shop organising family functions,” Mr Moritz said.

“The celebrations were very much reflective of the Australian Bush Christmas and we are delighted to give visitors a taste of that with the Bush Galah Christmas Show.”

Visitors can also take a trip through the South East Queensland countryside on the Santa Celebration Steam Train on Sunday 28 November. Bookings are essential and extra charges apply. Tickets do not include entry into the Museum.

Picnic hampers will be available for the Santa Celebration event and must be pre-ordered by phoning The Workshops Rail Museum on (07) 3432 5100 or downloading a booking form from www.theworkshops.qm.qld.gov.au. Visitors are also welcome to bring their own picnic lunch.

The Workshops Rail Museum is part of the Queensland Museum and is winner of Australian and Queensland Tourism Awards for Heritage and Cultural Tourism.
