Museum free for families and workers to celebrate Ipswich history

03 August 2011

Ipswich residents plus past and present Queensland Rail workers will enjoy free entry to The Workshops Rail Museum’s Annual Workers Reunion & Ipswich Heritage Faire event on Sunday 21 August 2011.

This year the annual event is set to expand with the addition of the famous Ipswich Heritage Faire incorporated into the celebrations that pays homage to the enormous contribution made by Ipswich and Queensland Rail workers to the development of the state.

Director of The Workshops Rail Museum Andrew Moritz said the Ipswich Heritage Faire activities are an ideal addition to the popular event, as the site and the men and women of Queensland Rail played a large role in shaping Ipswich’s heritage and culture.

“It’s very fitting to be celebrating the rich and diverse history of Queensland’s oldest provincial city with our Annual Workers Reunion, as the Ipswich Railway Workshops were the centre of the Ipswich community, socially and economically for many years,” Mr Moritz said.

Parents can enjoy some childhood nostalgia, as the event will feature heritage based games for children to enjoy among some contemporary activities.

“Young visitors are encouraged to take part in our colouring competition by downloading the entry form from our website and bringing it in on the event day to go into the draw to win a family Steam Train trip.”

Visitors can expect a variety of things to do and see on the day with market stalls, live entertainment, Workers at The Workshops photographic exhibition, screening of Rebirth of a Queensland Icon film and much more.

A special Workers Steam Train will also depart the Museum for a round trip to historic Grandchester through scenic countryside. Extra charges apply and bookings are essential.

The annual event is now in its tenth year and, thanks to the generous support of Ipswich City Council, all Ipswich residents receive free entry for the day (proof of residency required).

The celebration is also a great opportunity for Ipswich residents to show off their award-winning Museum to visiting friends and family with 50% off entry for their accompanying guests.

The Workshops Rail Museum is part of the Queensland Museum and is winner of Australian and Queensland Tourism Awards for Heritage and Cultural Tourism.
