Clowning around with Circus Train these school holidays

06 September 2012

Circus TrainRoll up, roll up as the Ringmaster and Clown share the magic this spring when The Workshops Rail Museum presents the captivating event Circus Train from 15 September to 14 October, showcasing the often forgotten connection between rail and the circus to young visitors.

Through hands on activities and a display of circus memorabilia, the event explores the history of the travelling circus, focusing on the trains that moved the circus throughout the state.

Director of The Workshops Rail Museum Andrew Moritz said the event was all about hands-on fun.

“Young visitors can initiate their own circus fun in Action Alley with a variety of activities that can challenge them physically with Circus Camp, have them laugh at themselves in the House of Mirrors, role play with dress ups and more,” Mr Moritz said.

“The Moving Goods area of the Museum is the perfect backdrop to Circus Station that boasts plenty of activities, including games, puzzles and craft for young visitors.”

With his own version of the Big Top, the Ringmaster will entertain visitors with his tricks and stories with regular performances throughout the day.

Visitors young at heart can appreciate and marvel at the hand-picked collection of photographs, stories and vintage advertising showcasing Circus Trains of yesteryear that reveal a little-recognised side to Queensland’s rail history.

“When people consider the history of rail in Queensland they immediately think about freight and passenger trains, however rail played an important role in bringing entertainment and fun to rural towns,” Mr Moritz said.

“When the circus came to town it was met with a great deal of excitement and celebration and we hope to capture this excitement with a program full of fun and educational activities.”

Visitors can put themselves in the big floppy shoes of circus folk from long ago by experiencing the steady pull of vintage carriages hauled by a heritage steam locomotive when the Circus Steam Train departs 3 October. Bookings are essential for this charming trip.
