It’s Official! Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends™ are World Record Breakers

16 April 2011

Thomas & Friends TrackMaster™ Longest Toy Train Track Guinness World Record AttemptThomas the Tank Engine™ has received official notification from the Guinness Book of World Records™ that he and his friends are now the holders of the ‘World’s Longest Toy Train Track’ record.

To commemorate and celebrate this achievement, Thomas the Tank Engine and The Workshops Rail Museum staff have received their official Guinness Book of World Records certificate from Sir Topham Hatt, The Fat Controller.

Constructed at The Workshops Rail Museum, Ipswich, in November last year, the Australian toy train track broke the existing Guinness World Record™ held by Japan.

The Thomas–themed toy train track was built using Thomas the Tank Engine Fisher-Price TrackMaster™ pieces, and measured 2.014 kilometres, making it 364 metres longer than the previously-held record, which was built at Mediage/Aqua City, Odaiba, Japan on the 23rd August 2006.

The toy train track was engineered using 10,197 pieces of Trackmaster™ track and included 40 Thomas & Friends engines and 40 stations. It took a team of 20 people 214 hours to build, and it spanned 35m x 5m wide. The total length of the structure was six times the height of the Eiffel Tower, five times higher than the Empire State Building, five and a half times the height of Uluru, and long enough to surround the Melbourne Cricket Ground four times.

To break the record Thomas & Friends had to make one full circuit of the track without falling off or stopping. Thomas made it round the track in two hours and 52 minutes, and just to make sure the record was broken, he did it two more times!

Also on hand at the ceremony was Ray Murphy and the team of model builders responsible for the construction of the record-breaking track and groups of children ready to celebrate with Thomas.

Meagan Reay, Marketing Director at Mattel, Australia said, “To be official World Record Breakers is fantastic for Thomas & Friends and all of us here at Mattel. We are glad that our Thomas & Friends TrackMaster™ sets, along with Ray Murphy and his amazing team, were able to provide the track platform for Thomas to make his epic journey.”

Tom Punch, Managing Director of Haven Licensing, Australian Agent for Thomas & Friends said: “Congratulations to everyone who was involved with this record breaker. To be officially recognised as the world record holders is very exciting. Thomas the Tank Engine is the world’s most popular toy train and so it is fitting that Thomas officially holds this record.”

Andrew Moritz, Director of The Workshops Rail Museum, said, “We are so proud of this achievement. Thanks to everyone who was involved, particularly to Ray Murphy and his model building team, who worked tirelessly to create this world record track. It has been an incredible few months for us at The Workshops Rail Museum, to become official record breakers and to receive the 2010 Australian Tourism Award for Heritage and Culture. We also have our very popular Day out with Thomas 2011 event starting. We have a lot to celebrate here at the moment.”

Day out with Thomas 2011 is now on at The Workshops Rail Museum and runs until 2 May 2011. For more information, visit www.theworkshops.qm.qld.gov.au or call (07) 3432 5100.
